The Tale of Ruby Rose was Roger Scholes's first feature film and was nominated for a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1987 and won four critics prizes including Best Actress and Best Director.

In the wild and isolated wilderness of the Tasmanian highlands, Ruby Rose is overcome by her phobic fear of darkness. She cries out to the elemental spirits that surround her, and is driven to take a harrowing journey out of the mountains to seek help from her lost grandmother.
